The New Class of Dusty Daz White Dwarfs
نویسندگان
چکیده
Our mid-infrared survey of 124 white dwarfs with the Spitzer Space Telescope and the IRAC imager has revealed an infrared excess associatedwith thewhite dwarf WD2115 560 naturally explained by circumstellar dust. This object is the fourth white dwarf observed to have circumstellar dust. All four are DAZ white dwarfs, i.e., they have both photospheric Balmer lines and photospheric metal lines. We discuss these four objects as a class, which we abbreviate ‘‘DAZd,’’ where the ‘‘d’’ stands for ‘‘dust.’’ Using an optically thick, geometrically thin diskmodel analogous toSaturn’s rings, we find that the inner disk edges are atk0.1–0.2 R and that the outer disk edges are 0.3–0.6 R . This model naturally explains the accretion rates and lifetimes of the detected WD disks and the accretion rates inferred from photospheric metal abundances. A Dusty Disk Around WD1150−153: Explaining the Metals in White Dwarfs by Accretion from the Interstellar Medium versus Debris Disks
We report the discovery of excess K-band radiation from a metal-rich DAV white dwarf star, WD1150-153. Our near infrared spectroscopic observations show that the excess radiation cannot be explained by a (sub)stellar companion, and is likely to be caused by a debris disk similar to the other DAZ white dwarfs with circumstellar debris disks. We find that the fraction of DAZ white dwarfs with det...
متن کاملDebris Disks Around White Dwarfs: The Daz Connection
We present near-infrared spectroscopic observations of 20 previously known DAZ white dwarfs obtained at the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility. Two of these white dwarfs (G29-38 and GD 362) are known to display significant K-band excesses due to circumstellar debris disks. Here we report the discovery of excess K-band radiation from another DAZ white dwarf, WD 0408 041 (GD 56). Using spectroscopi...
متن کاملExcess Infrared Radiation from the Massive Daz White Dwarf GD 362: A Debris Disk?
We report the discovery of excess K-band radiation from the massive DAZ white dwarf star GD 362. Combining infrared photometric and spectroscopic observations, we show that the excess radiation cannot be explained by a stellar or substellar companion, and is likely to be caused by a debris disk. This would be only the second such system known, discovered 18 years after G29-38, the only single w...
متن کاملThe accretion - diffusion scenario for metals in cool white dwarfs
We calculated diffusion timescales for Ca, Mg, Fe in hydrogen atmosphere white dwarfs with temperatures between 5000 and 25000 K. With these timescales we determined accretion rates for a sample of 38 DAZ white dwarfs from the recent studies of Zuckerman et al. (2003) and Koester et al. (2005). Assuming that the accretion rates can be calculated with the Bondi-Hoyle formula for hydrodynamic acc...
متن کاملDisks and Planets around Massive White Dwarfs
We predict the existence of dusty disks and possibly CO planets around massive white dwarfs. We show that the thermal emission from these disks should be detectable in the infrared. The planets may also be detectable either by direct IR imaging, spectroscopy, or using the pulsations of the white dwarfs. Subject headings: white dwarfs—stars: planetary systems—accretion disks
